DOMAINE DE BARGYLUS

The syrian estate, Domaine de Bargylus s.a., is located in Jebel el-Ansariyeh known in graeco-roman antiquity as Mount Bargylus, a mountain range said to have been covered with vineyards and olive groves situated in the hinterland of the modern coastal city of Lattakia (ancient Laodicea) and the archeological site of the well-known Canaanite metropolis of Ugarit. In line with this strong historical reference, the wine has been christened Bargylus and the vineyard, with a 50 hectares targeted surface area, is planted with the best cepages of the day namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot for the red wine and Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for the white wine. Bargylus also benefits from French and Italian wine-growing and winemaking expertise. The well-known Bordeaux consultant Stephane Derenoncourt is advising Domaine de Bargylus.Planted on sunny argilo-calcareous soil, the vines benefit from warm days and chilly nights which contributes to the long finish characteristic of good wine (what the French call “longueur en bouche”). Bargylus is not only intended for the local Syrian market but aims at being exported to international markets targeting wine connoisseurs and amateurs all over the world.
